Recently I have been in contact with a few potential customers for Global Nomad. Interesting enough they shared the same kind of experience: they used a cheap-freelancer to develop their website. But after paying and the site being finished for only 60%, the freelancer became too busy and the process was delayed or even stopped. If this is also your story, read on!
Professionalism versus cheap web development
There is difference in cheap-freelancing and professional freelancing. A professional freelance web-designer wrote on a freelance bulletin 'should we not have minimum prices for work to be done'. He was upset with the current situation where students, young engineers and designers have very low tariffs to design and develop websites. And the problem is that those cheap products are often not complete-finished, nor professional or unique. So, I ask myself with many other developers: what is the point of low-end web development when customers only decide to use a professional web development business after hard experiences?
Serving as professional attitude
Talking for our business, Global Nomad, we take web development serious. Many of our customers from the west are a little hesitant to outsource to China - and for sure Tibet would be another obstacle. We have the problem on not being able to have face to face contact. But we do serve customers. I think end users should see the difference there. Where cheap-freelance says yea-yea and perform not, a professional business would answer: let’s review this again. Often in the end the end user decide to not launch certain parts of their initial idea because they see it will take lots of effort and so funds to develop.
Choose the cheap-way
But the opposite is true too - I have seen customers walking away because they want it cheap and now. The low-costly-freelancer at the corner of the street or attic of neighbors’ house makes great promises. So they choose - fair enough - that path. Only to find out that after some time changes need to be made, the developer isn’t’ around anymore.
When to use the cheap-freelance route
For sure there is a place for cheap and rapid web-development projects. You might have a project, an event or just need to have something done quickly. Choose the cheap-freelancer! But if you desire something lasting, it’s not the best to follow the cheap route.
Advise
If you are a self-respected-organization that wants a presence on the internet you should stay choose a partner in web development. There are many! In the end that will save you lots of frustration. Second, I think you need to spend a little more money on your website than you want. By doing that you will find the results better than expected!
