Magento Performance problems

Magento is known for its scalability, payment gateway integration and shipping capabilities. But even a small Magento shop requires a server that has high performance. Recently Global Nomad did some tests in the quest for finding a good Magento hosting solution.
China bandwith - a big influencer
We soon discovered that our location - Qinghai province in China - isn't the best place as reference for internet speed tests. Here on the plateau things will go steady but not always that quick. We found some tools to get a better reference how people from the outside world experience the website.
First we started out using the network / timing trace in Google Chrome. A great tool to get an indication how your website is loaded into your browser. But doing it in this way you need to take into account your own bandwidth. That doesn't have to be that bad! But to get a more general impressions how people outside your network experience the website, we used tools.pingdom.com. It’s a great asset in your tests because it looks out of your own world to the website under test.
So we put two exact copies of the Magento website on two different servers in different countries. Comparing the two results from Chrome and pingdom.com it was more easy to make a decision where to host.
Hosting - big business
Just a little warning for those who want cheap hosting. Don’t believe what the website promises of even what the sales person shares with. As I was dealing with a firm called bluehost the other day, there were great promises but not really performance in the end. It is not possible to sit first class for a third class ticket. With web-hosting and especial for Magento it is not really possible to go cheap.
